Garza took 34 percent of the vote, well ahead of his closest rival, former mayor Bob Sheehan, who took just under 20 percent. Rollie Paulsgrove finished third with about 14 percent of the vote.
Galesburg Register Mail Endorses Sal Garza For Mayor
The city needs an aggressive mayor, who is well versed in economic development and has plenty of ideas about how to move the city forward. Garza is sharp, enthusiastic, ambitious and tireless — these qualities should serve him in office. Of all the candidates he’s the one who most seems ready to respond with the sense of urgency required. The city was already reeling from a loss of more than 2,000 factory jobs from 2003 to 2005 when the national economic crisis struck in 2008. Unemployment here reached 9.4 percent in February.
Galesburg is looking for a way forward, and we think Garza has the fortitude to advance the city despite the inevitable setbacks and disagreements that will occur along the way.
Garza also knows the city’s past, which provides an important context for projecting our future.
Mayoral Candidates Address Crime
Sal Garza said his experience as a state economic development official gave him the edge over his rivals. He said he had the “passion” and “drive” to make Galesburg prosper
Sal Garza Chairs Team Knox County
Team Knox County, chaired by state official and mayoral candidate Sal Garza, conducted a “community readiness survey” and found the county to be in a state of “denial or resistance” about local poverty. The survey asked questions of business and community leaders from a wide range of backgrounds.
GARZA: Galesburg Needs Plan For Change
We are facing tough times across the United States, as the economy continues to decline and unemployment increases. But tough times are nothing new to Galesburg. The concern that I, as well many others, have is that Galesburg does not have a plan nor a direction to bring about the necessary changes needed to create a future for our young people, our families, and our businesses.
Our Key To A Better Future
It’s easy for people to abstractly talk about outsourcing jobs and free trade. But it’s different when you’ve actually suffered the effects of plant closings, job loss, and fear about the future.I’ve lived those experiences. I was a casualty of the Maytag closing in the 2003, and I chose to stay here to raise my family and help Galesburg find a better future. Today, I work for main economic development agency in the state and have learned what it takes to bring good jobs to Galesburg.
That’s why I'm running for mayor. Now, more than ever, we need leaders who can work cooperatively to bring good-paying jobs back to Galesburg, restore the values we hold dear, and improve our quality of life. My experience, knowledge, and passion will help us open doors to a better future for Galesburg.

Sal Garza’s Story
Candidate for Mayor
It’s easy for people to abstractly talk about outsourcing jobs and free trade. But it’s different when you’ve actually suffered the effects of plant closings, job loss and fear about the future.
I’ve lived those experiences. I was a casualty of the Maytag closing in the 2003. I had started at the bottom at Maytag and worked my way up the old-fashioned way—the way we are told about from when we were kids—through hard work, perseverance and believing in the dignity of doing a job well. I worked there more than 20 years and climbed the ladder to become a Senior Engineer.
But it wasn’t enough. Maytag shipped my job and 2,000 others to Mexico and left us behind with nothing but broken promises.
They may have taken our jobs, our health care and our pensions but they didn’t take away our dignity and our hope for a better future.
Sal Garza Announces For Mayor
Article By Karen S. Lynch Writing For The Zephyr
Garza is seeking the office on the platform of a "new beginning" in Galesburg, with a focus on job retention and economic development for the future. Priorities of his bid for mayor will be attracting and retaining good-paying jobs with benefits, keeping the streets safe, improving the infrastructure and making Galesburg's quality of life "second to none." He plans to run a grassroots campaign by walking door-to-door throughout the community and listen to people's concerns.
